        Potted ornamental plants are ornamental plants that we enjoy the overall beauty of plants in a pot. Parts of plants that can be a beauty attraction are flowers, leaves, and the shape of the plant as a whole. Plants that we enjoy the beauty of flowers such as orchids, chrysanthemums, roses. Plants that we enjoy the beauty of their leaves for example anthurium, aglaonema suplir, begonia. Plants that we enjoy the beauty of the plant as a whole such as bonsai, adenium, and others.


        things that need to be considered in producing ornamental plants in pots are the requirements for growing plants, media needs, fertilizer needs, and plant maintenance. Most ornamental plants in pots require less than 100% light, so they need to be shaded or placed in a greenhouse. this time we will discuss some potential plants for breeding including orchids, aglonema, anthurium and adenium




Orchid

        Orchids are known as the queen of ornamental plants, because of their beautiful shapes and colors and various forms of flowers. Orchid has the Latin name Orchidaceae, which is a flowering plant that has the most members or types. Orchid flowers have a distinctive shape that is very different from the others. Orchid flowers are arranged in a compound, visible from the elongated flower stalks, visible from the leaf axils, the flowers are bilaterally symmetrical, have a labellum. The petals (sepals) are generally the same color as the petals (tepals). Orchids also have benefits, but especially in the world of decoration and as ornamental plants. Orchids are usually used as symbols of love, luxury, and beauty throughout the centuries.

        Most orchid plants are epiphytic plants. Epiphytic plants are plants that grow by riding on other plants as a place of life. Unlike parasites, epiphytic plants do not harm the plant they are on.

        The orchid market is growing rapidly. The types of orchids that are market favorites include Dendrobium, Phaleonopsis (moon orchid), Vanda, Catleya, Oncidium, Renanthera, Aranda, and Cymbidium. These orchids are sold in pots and also as cut flowers. Orchids used as cut flowers have the following criteria: a large number of buds in one stalk, have a long durability, and have an attractive appearance or color. Of the existing genera, species from the genus Dendrobium and Vanda which have the potential to be developed as cut flowers because their germplasm is widely available and easy to obtain. The biggest consumers of cut orchids are flower shops, hotels, offices, catering services and florists.


The characteristics of orchids.

  • Orchid flowers can live in certain sunlight
  • Orchid flowers do not have fibrous roots that are inside.
  • Orchid flowers have root fungi or what is often called mycorrhizae which are found on the root surface
  • Orchid flowers have stems in the form of brushes.
  • Orchids that live in the ground have short stems
  • Orchid flowers have oval-shaped leaves.
  • Flowers on orchids have bilateral symmetry.
  • Orchid flowers produce fruit that is shaped like a capsule and has a green color.
  • The seeds produced by orchids are very small in size.
  • The roots of the orchid flower have organs that have flesh or are often called succulents.

         In producing orchids, both potted and cut orchids, what must be prepared are: land preparation (especially for cut flowers), plastic housing preparation, seed preparation, media preparation, planting, plant maintenance (watering, fertilization, pest and disease control) and harvesting and post-harvest handling.
