SHALLOT
SHALLOT
GROWTH CONDITIONS
Climate
Onion plants prefer to grow in dry climates. Onion plant sensitive to high rainfall and rain intensity, and foggy weather. This plant need maximum sunlight exposure (minimum 70% irradiation), air temperature 25 - 32 degrees Celsius, and relative humidity 50 - 70 %.
Onion plants can form tubers in areas where the average air temperature is 22 degrees Celsius and will form tubers.which is greater if it gets more than 12 hours of irradiation, below a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius the shallot plant will not have bulbs.
Land
Shallot plants require soil with a crumb structure, medium to clayey texture, good drainage or aerase, containing sufficient organic matter.and the soil reaction is not acidic (soil pH: 5.6 - 6.5). The most suitable soil for shallots is alluvial plants or a combination with soil humus or latosol, a good time to plant shallots is during the dry season with sufficient water availability, namely April/May after the rice harvest in July/August
Selection of seeds
In general, shallots are propagated by using tubers as seeds. Shallot seeds are selected which are healthy, shiny in color, compact / not porous,
the skin is not injured and has been stored 2 - 3 months after harvest. The factor that determines the quality of shallot seed bulbs is the size of the bulbs. based on size
tubers, classified into 3 classes, namely:
- large seed tubers with a diameter of more than 1.8 cm,
- medium seed tubers with a diameter of 1.5 - 1.8 cm,
- small seed tubers with a diameter of less than 1.5 cm
